Authorities in Vietnam’s largest tourist island Phu Quoc will demolish The Peak tourist site on Dien Tien Mountain in June due to a series of long-standing land-use and construction violations.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment under the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone announced on May 29 that the project owner must voluntarily remove the illegal structures by June 3 or face forced demolition.

Over the past two days, the site has posted notices informing visitors of its closure, the relocation of assets, and the removal of several structures.

The Peak was developed in mid-2024 on land owned by Le Trong Dai, on a mountain more than 700 meters above sea level.

Dai later leased the land to other parties for tourism-related business activities.

In December 2024, local authorities identified multiple violations at the site, including construction that did not comply with approved planning regulations and the unauthorized conversion of approximately 5,000 square meters of agricultural land for commercial use.

Authorities also found that land reclamation had altered the terrain across an area of 2,600 square meters and encroached on public land and protected forest areas.

Despite receiving administrative penalties and multiple orders to rectify the violations, the owner failed to comply.

Phu Quoc has recently intensified efforts to tackle long-standing cases of illegal construction and land encroachment.

Local authorities have already demolished numerous villas and other structures built on public land and national defense land.

Phu Quoc, which drew more than 8.1 million visitors last year, will be turned into a world-class destination for tourism and high-end services as it prepares to host the APEC summit in 2027, according to An Giang Province’s master plan for 2021-2030 announced on May 17.
