Seven painters from across Vietnam have come together in Ho Chi Minh City for Private Skies (Khoảng trời riêng), a new exhibition that celebrates artistic individuality while emphasizing collaboration instead of competition.

The exhibition presents recent works by five female and two male artists – Dinh Mien, Dinh Ho, Thuy Phuong, Tu Quyen, Nguyen But, Thao My, and Le Thanh – whose diverse backgrounds and artistic approaches are united by a shared passion for painting.

What began as a chance encounter quickly evolved into a creative partnership founded on shared artistic values despite differences in style and technique.

Each artist brings a personal perspective to the exhibition, with every painting reflecting individual stories, experiences and emotional responses.

Although they pursue different professions outside the studio and come from varied life experiences, they are connected by a common desire to express themselves through visual art.

Their works explore themes ranging from humanity and nature to the quiet beauty of everyday life.

Art as connection rather than competition

Representative of the group, painter Thuy Phuong said the artists found common ground not only through their professional interests but also through mutual respect and friendship.

Rather than emphasizing individual recognition or stylistic differences, the group focused on creating the strongest exhibition possible together.

“We aren’t concerned with highlighting either our similarities or our differences,” she said. “Our goal is simply to make the project the best it can be. Everything is based on supporting and celebrating one another – not rejecting or competing with each other.”

She added that visitors move naturally through contrasting yet complementary themes, from paintings inspired by childhood memories to peaceful scenes of Vietnam’s Central Highlands, creating an immersive artistic journey instead of visual confrontation.

Different techniques, shared purpose

Five members of the group – Dinh Mien, Tu Quyen, Dinh Ho, Thuy Phuong and Nguyen But – primarily work in traditional lacquer painting.

Meanwhile, Thao My presents acrylic on canvas, while Le Thanh exhibits oil paintings on canvas.

Despite these technical differences, the artists share a belief that art has the power to connect people and offer emotional healing.

Through color, composition and personal expression, they hope to create an open dialogue between artists and audiences.

Painter Ho Thi Xuan Thu, who has followed the group’s development over time, described Private Skies as an impressive exhibition by a new generation of Vietnamese artists.

“They represent the next generation of artists from different provinces and regions,” she said. “They are full of energy and creativity, and art lovers have warmly embraced their work.”
